WMA Masters 2019/20 ‘Light’ finalists announced

WMA is pleased to announce the five finalists for its 2019/20 Masters award on ‘Light’. The photographic works responding to the theme, in the context of Hong Kong, will be exhibited in 2021. The winner of the WMA Masters will be announced during the exhibition.

The WMA Masters is a non-profit photography award aiming to nurture the growth of photography as an art form, and to spark discussions of social issues of great importance to Hong Kong through visual images.

The five finalists works are (listed in last name’s alphabetical order):

Caleb Fung – GLORY 503
Liao Jiaming – Do You Know Where the Birds are?
O’ Young Moli, Julian – 1/8
Tang Kwong San, Yuen Nga Chi – Somewhere in Time
Wong Wei-him – BURNT

“For this year’s ‘Light’ theme, we saw strong submissions by new young talent,”‘ says Zoher Abdoolcarim, chair of this cycle’s judging panel. “Every finalist has presented a creative hybrid of literal and metaphorical interpretations. Together, their body of work is reflected through the prism of Hong Kong’s struggles today, and opens a window to the city’s wider social climate. WMA deserves commendation for being a platform for nurturing photographic artists.” 

The judging panel is comprised of international industry leaders in photography, art, publishing, and the civic society including Zoher ABDOOLCARIM, BUT Ho Ming, Clément CHEROUX, Brendan EMBSER, May FUNG, Yumi GOTO and ZHUANG Wubin.
